Magic in the air at Ingatestones Victorian evening

With the smell of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts wafting through the High Street, shopkeepers dressed like characters from a Charles Dickens novel and Santa's sleigh gleaming brightly in the marketplace, this was clearly no ordinary Friday evening in Ingatestone.

The annual Victorian Christmas Evening, organised by the Ingatestone and Fryerning Business Club (IFBC) in association with Beresfords, has become known for its busy programme of traditional entertainment and heart-warming atmosphere – and this year was no exception, attracting thousands of visitors.

As usual, many shops stayed open late to lay on food and drink and spread the festive cheer.

The event began with a horse-drawn carriage procession along the main road, led by Highland bagpipes, with Father Christmas and dignitaries.

Spoilt for choice in entertainment, visitors were wowed by carol singers, bell ringers, and dramatics whilst they took part in a variety of fundraising favourites, including a raffle.

Beresfords are one of the main supporters of the event and, as such, ensured that both locals and visitors entered into the festive spirit. In our office alone over 150 mince pies were consumed, 29 bottles of wine enjoyed and 200 balloons given away. Whilst children were decorated by a free face painter, mums and dads had the opportunity to win a hamper, champagne, chocolates and biscuits in our raffle.

Beresfords Ingatestone branch manager Denise Morris, who has been a staunch supporter of the event over the years, explained why it is so important.

"As a local company, we are always looking for ways to support the community, and the Victorian Christmas evening is a key date in Ingatestone’s diary. It is always a special event that allows all those who attend to enter into the festive spirit while raising the profile of the village in general.”
